What is NVIDIA MX150 and its Benefits?

There are typically two main benefits of this graphics card:

  • Affordable: This graphics card is inexpensive and therefore can be found in relatively inexpensive machines.
  • Low Voltage: This graphics card consumes extremely low power, as such, if you want an Ultrabook or a thin and lightweight laptop for portability, then this can ensure that you can stay on the go for a long time before a recharge.

This graphics card is basically a successor to the Nvidia GT 940M. However, in terms of performance, the MX150 can even out do the Nvidia GTX 950M.

The real difference is that it can give a great performance and yet has a power rating that is 3 times as low as the Nvidia GT 940M.

That basically gives MX150 an awesome performance per dollar as we as performance per voltage value.

How Does it Cope Up with Games?

If you are talking about light or older games, then this can handle them all at high graphics without any issues.

However, if you start talking about the latest AAA titles like Borderland 3, Division 2, Far Cry New Dawn, then this can support them all but only at low graphics that too at 720p resolution.

You can check out the benchmark results of this graphics card for various games here.

Fortunately, famous online games like Battlefield 5, Fortnite, Dota 2, League of Legends can all be supported at medium – high graphics settings at 1080p resolution.

In the end, this is basically a mid range graphics card. It is not as bad as the integrated Intel HD or even the integrated AMD Vega graphics card, nor is it as good as the powerhouses like NVIDIA GTX 1060 and beyond.

How Does it Cope Up with 3D Designing Software?

Some of the famous designing and 3D modeling software include AutoDesk AutoCAD, AutoDesk Revit, 3Ds Max, Google Sketchup and also Unity Engine – if you are into game designing.

The maximum recommended video memory for these software is 512 MB. Basically, you will only require a higher Video RAM than 512 is if you plan to make very complex designs or games.

Secondly, they require DirectX 11 with up to Shader Model 5 support. Some software like Google SketchUp also require Open GL 3.0 support.

Fortunately, this particular graphics card supports all that and much more. It has a video memory of 2 GB VRAM- which is more than the recommended value of most software.

3. ASUS VivoBook S410UN-NS74 – Powerful Ultrabook

ASUS VivoBook S410UN-NS74While this isn’t quite the high end premium ultrabook, it sure gives the vibes oof one not just from its hardware, but also from its gorgeous looks.

Like most of the thin and light weight laptop, this too measures at a mere 0.7″ in thickness. However, it offers exquisite looks with a beautiful colorful chassis as well as a screen with slim bezels.

One big distinction between this laptop and the one mentioned previously is that this offers a 14″ screen as compared to a 15.6″ screen. 14″ is considered an excellent screen size for those who have portability as their primary requirement.

Sure there are even smaller laptops available with 13.3″ screen, however, those can be too small for a comfortable long haul work experience.

As such, 14″ is a great combination of portability as well as work comfort.

Furthermore, while this too offers 8GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD like the laptops mentioned above, its greatest distinction is certainly the much more powerful Intel Core i7-8550U processor.

Now this is a powerhouse laptop for thin and light machines. Note that this too, like the Core i5-8250U, is a ‘U’ designated processor. This means that this too consumes less power and thus ensures a long lasting battery life.

While, in terms of performance it is inferior to the Core i7-8750H, the Core i7-8550U offers the best performance-to-voltage value. As such, you basically get a machine that can last for hours without a recharge and at the same time offers you the capacity to handle fairly complex projects.

HP Spectre X360 is a premium convertible ultrabook range of laptops. HP basically has three convertible laptops series namely, Pavilion x360, Envy x360 and Spectre X360. The Spectre X360 series is the king of them all.

This laptop not only excels in terms of hardware, but also when it comes to premium craftsmanship. As such, this laptop is a beauty to behold.

We stated earlier that this is a renewed machine. Well what does that mean? Basically Amazon Renewed laptops are laptops that had previously been owned which then have been repaired, refitted and refurbished to look and work like brand new.

5. ASUS ZenBook Flip 14 – Premium Convertible (2-in-1) Ultrabook

ASUS ZenBook Flip 14Finally here we have a brand new premium convertible ultrabook and unlike HP Spectre x360 15-CH011DX above, this is NOT renewed or refurbished.

While it costs slightly more than the HP Spectre x360 15-CH011DX above, the fact it wasn’t previously owned, along with a few useful features, makes this one of the best laptops with MX150 if you are looking for high end premium machine.

This is a 14″ FHD convertible laptop. Thus, in terms of mobility, it is easier to carry around as compared to a 15.6″ laptop. On the downside though, it is less comfortable to work on.

The screen has both pros and cons. For starters, despite being a premium machine, the screen does not offer the IPS panel. On the plus side though, it covers 100% sRGB color space. As such, you can be sure that the panel used is superior and excellent for editors and designers.

Secondly, this laptop has a an 80% screen-to-body ratio. While this is still considered slim bezel, premium laptops of this category have a much higher ratio – in other words, must slimmer bezels.

Fortunately though, the bezel may not be the slimmest but the chassis on this laptop sure is. With a thickness of about 0.5″, this is the thinnest laptop in this list. It is quite a remarkable feat to fit an entire convertible mechanism in half an inch machine.

In addition to a beautiful and slim form factor, this laptop also offers a powerful hardware which is notch more advanced than the HP Spectre x360 15-CH011DX above.

Like the HP Spectre x360 15-CH011DX, this too offers 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of SSD, GeForce MX150, Fingerprint Reader and also a Core i7 processor.

The difference, however, is in the version of the Core i7 offered here. While the HP Spectre x360 15-CH011DX above offers Intel Core i7-8550U, this machine offers the newer Core i7-8565U processor.

Core i7-8565U vs Core i7-8550U

Core i7-8565U (left) vs Core i7-8550U (right): Source: userbenchmark.com

In terms of performance the Core i7-856U is about 13% as powerful. This is a significant difference, given the fact that they both cost almost the same.

While this is an excellent laptop for designers who work with digital pen / stylus, it, unfortunately, does not come equipped with one. You will have buy one separately.

In the end, if you are looking for a 14″ premium convertible laptop with one of the thinnest chassis in the market, then this is among the best laptops with MX150.

Conclusion

Here we looked at some of the best laptops with MX150.

You may noticed that this graphics card is available on both mainstream as well as premium/expensive ultrabooks.

The reason is quite simple. This is a mid range graphics card and thus does not cost much. As such, it can easily be found on mainstream laptops.

Secondly, since it has a small profile and since it consumes very low power, it is a preferably choice among the premium ultrabook as well.

Ultrabooks are generally expensive due to their build quality, premium display, slim profile and rather powerful hardware in a thin chassis. The MX150 does not contribute much to the high price of an Ultrabook.
