If you don’t quite have the budget for a 4-core, then a dual-core i5 or i3 will still do a great job, processing quickly and smoothly. You want to make sure they’ll be able to install Office updates without issue. Look for a memory clock of 2.4 GHz at a minimum. 

RAM & Storage Space

RAM stores data temporarily, so when you turn off your laptop, the RAM data is "lost." Not only that, but one of its primary functions is it allowing the processor to process more information, so the more you have, the quicker it will work, theoretically.

To store large Excel files, you're not going to need an exceptionally large amount of storage space – GGB will do. Even if it is too big for your available RAM, you can always go the route of cloud storage such as Dropbox. I do recommend going with a model that has SSD storage instead of HDD. While the latter is more affordable, they're simply not as efficient.

While it's able to perform almost every function the full version offers, some charts are unsupported in Online. These include charts which are part of a group of charts, charts which rely on external references, and those which use particular data sources unsupported for workbooks.
