As is the case with almost all educational fields, nursing students require a reliable laptop to accompany them all the time.
The good news is that Nursing does not require a high end or a highly powerful laptop.
If you were an Engineering, Geology or a Data Science student, a powerful laptop would have been a prerequisite. With nursing, that is not the case.
Keeping all the requirements in mind, here we will review the best laptops for nursing students.

What Kind of Laptops do Nursing Students Need?
There isn’t a specific laptop category designed particularly for nursing students. However, you can judge one by taking some important specs in to consideration.
A Nurse or a nursing student is always on the go. Therefore, it is crucial for a laptop to be highly portable. For this, we recommend a thin and a light laptop.
Most conventional laptop boast a 15.6″ screen. While a large screen laptop is comfortable to look at it, it may not always be practical for those who seek portability.
In that case, you can go for smaller laptops like 14″ or 13.3″ laptops.
This is yet another highly important consideration. You need a laptop that can at least last for 8 hours or more. Fortunately, this is quite possible for the laptops that we have chosen here.
As mentioned earlier, nursing isn’t a highly demanding field when it comes to computing power requirement. Therefore, you certainly don’t need a powerhouse.
What you do need is a power efficient processor along with an ample amount of RAM and preferably an SSD drive.
Power efficient processors are a must. Intel power efficient processor are generally designated with a ‘U’ suffix i.e Intel Core i7-8550U. Whereas, the power hungry processors ditch the ‘U’ suffice i.e Intel Core i7-8750H.
While the power efficient are weaker in comparison, they are also cheaper and offer a very long lasting battery life which is a must for nursing students.

- Extensive connectivity with HDMI, USB type C,...
ASUS ZenBook series really needs no introduction. They were the pioneers of premium Ultrabook laptops for Windows operating system.
We highly recommend this laptop for its portability, battery life, and a fairly powerful hardware configuration.
For starters, this is a gorgeous laptop. It weighs only about 2.5 pounds and measures at a tiny 0.5 inches in thickness. Since this a premium laptop, it is built with some of the finest components.
The entire body is made out of aluminum. Besides that, it offers one of the most beautiful 13.3 inch FHD slim bezel display that covers 100% of the sRGB color space.
If you love photography, photo editing as a hobby, then you will appreciate the 100% sRGB coverage of the screen. If you are not, just understand that the color reproduction on this screen will be unlike anything you have seen before.
Furthermore, not only does it have a battery that can last for 14 hours, but its advanced lithium polymer battery can charge 60% of its capacity in a mere 49 minutes.
As far as the core hardware is concerned, this laptop offers the latest Intel Core i5-8265U processor (instead of the former Core i5-8250U), 8 GB of RAM and a 512 GB of RAM.
The Core hardware is perfect for nursing students. In fact, it may even be an overkill for some since nursing applications are not too demanding. As such, this laptop is more than just capable of serving your nursing education needs. It can even cater to your hobbies like editing, designing etc.
The 512 GB of SSD is a most welcome feature. As compared to HDD, SSDs are much faster. They also consume less power since they do not have any mechanical parts and thus save up on battery.
This laptop does have its drawbacks. For starters, the small screen may not appeal to everyone. Many students prefer larger and more comfortable screens.
Secondly, as mentioned earlier, it could be an overkill for most nursing students. You can definitely go for cheaper laptop and still manage to pass through your education without any trouble.
All in all, if you are looking for a stylish, powerful, premium, thin, light and portable laptop, then this is one of the best laptops for nursing students. However, it is not the cheapest.
2. Microsoft Surface Pro 6 – 12.3″ – Tablet + Laptop
- A best in class laptop with the versatility...
- More power now with the new 8th Generation...
- Ultra slim and light, starting at just 1.7...
- All day battery life, with upto 13.5 hours of...
Next up we have a highly coveted laptop for students of all fields. However, be warned that this is an expensive machine.
Microsoft Surface Pro is basically a Tablet that can be used as a laptop.
All of its powerful internal hardware is located behind the screen instead of underneath the keyboard as is the case with normal laptops.
As such, you can consider Microsoft Surface Pro to be one of the most powerful Tablet in the market.
Many nursing students prefer tablets over laptop for their nursing education. Tablets tend to last longer in terms of battery life, they are also highly portable and also great for entertainment.
With MicroSoft Surface Pro, you can enjoy the best of both worlds. This is a Tablet that is a highly capable laptop at the same time.
It offers a powerful hardware including a choice between Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 of the 8th generation. Furthermore you can choose between 8 GB or 16 GB of RAM. For nursing students, we would recommend you stick with Core i5 and 8 GB of RAM.
As far as the storage is concerned, you can choose between 128 GB, 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB of SSD. Storage capacity is a personal choice depending upon the amount of multimedia you have. I would recommend a bear minimum of 256 GB of work and occasional multimedia needs.
Note that since the storage is SSD, higher storage would cost way more than a conventional HDD.
Another great aspect about this laptop/Tablet is that it has a small screen size of 12.3″. Most convertible laptops have a large 15.6″ or 14″ screens making them useless in Tablet mode. Noone carries a 15.6″ tablet around as it is utterly impractical and cumbersome. With a 12.3″ size, that would not be an issue at all.
Battery wise, it offers a good 13.5 hours. Therefore, it should last for your entire day at nursing school on a single charge.
You should also note that MicroSoft Surface Pro is also an amazing designing laptop. It has a studio mode that allows you to draw and design graphics. However, the accessories like the Surface Pen and the Surface Dial are sold separately. If you are an amateur designer/photographer on the side, this may appeal to you.
There are two drawbacks to Microsoft Surface Pro 6. Firstly, it is very expensive. You can settle for laptops at almost half the price like the HP Pavilion X360 below and still breeze your way out of the nursing school. Secondly, the small screen may not appeal to everyone.
In the end, if you really a need Tablet disguised as a powerful laptop, then this beautiful and premium machine is one of the best laptops for nursing students.
3. ASUS VivoBook S410UN-NS74 – 15.6″ – Core i7 Processor
- This Certified Refurbished product is tested...
- 8th Generation Intel Core i7-8550U (Turbo up...
- 8GB DDR4 RAM and 256GB SSD
- 14" Full HD WideView display with up to 178°...
We have selected this laptop due to the sheer performance/dollar value it offers. Despite being cheaper than ASUS ZenBook UX331UA-AS51 and Mircosoft Surface Pro 6 reviewed above, it offers a much more powerful processor.
Specifically, it offers the power efficient Intel Core i7-8550U quad core processor with hyperthreading.
While you may not need the power of a Core i7 immediately as a nursing student, the benefit of this is that it is highly future proof. You can easily use this laptop for more than 5 years and it won’t show any signs of slowing down.
Besides, it offers a good 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD. They both are quite adequate for nursing students as well as reasonable for laptops of this price category.
There are two other components that separate it from the rest. The first is the 14″ screen. A 14″ screen is neither too small as 13.3″ screen nor as big as a 15.6″ screen. Therefore, it is a perfect compromise between portability and screen comfort.
Secondly, if offers a dedicated MX150 graphics card. While this is still an entry level graphics card, it should be able to handle low level 3D graphics and games. As a nursing student, you don’t need to worry about this feature much but still worth noting.
As far as portability goes. ASUS VivoBook S410UN-NS74 is 0.7 inches in thickness and offers 7-8 hours of battery life while actively using it.
If you are looking for a future proof and comfortable 14 inch, thin and stylish laptop, then this is one of the best laptops for nursing students.
4. HP Envy X360 – 15.6″ – Affordable Mid Range Laptop
- AMD Ryzen 5 2500U: AMD Quad-Core Ryzen 5...
- Expanded Storage: 8GB 2400MHz DDR4 SDRAM,...
- HP Envy X360 15: 15.6" Full HD ( 1920 x 1080...
- External Ports: 1 x USB 3.1 Type-C, 2 x USB...
HP Envy X360 offers one of the best specs in the market for its price category and therefore definitely deserves a spot in this list.
This is a large 15.6″ convertible laptop. However, unlike the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 that detaches from its keyboard dock, this laptop has a hinge rotate mechanism.
Therefore, the entire 15.6″ screen rotates on top of the keyboard to act as a tablet. While it is impractical to carry around a 15.6″ screen in tablet mode around, it is still great for tasks like note taking.
Besides, we haven’t listed this laptop due to its convertible feature. Instead we like this laptop due to its affordability. It offers almost as powerful a processor as the Zenbook above i.e AMD Ryzen 5 2500U processor but at the same time costs significantly less.
On top of that it offers a fair 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD. Furthermore, the integrated graphics card here i.e AMD Radeon Vega 8 is much more powerful than the Integrated Intel HD graphics in the Intel Processors.
Therefore, as a package, the HP Envy X360 has a hardware configuration that is more than sufficient for nursing students.
Moreover, not only is this laptop stylish, it is also fairly portable despite being a large laptop. It has a battery life that can last for more than 10 hours and it has a slim profile with 0.7 inch thickness.
The only design drawback for nursing students is that it weighs at 4.7 pounds. This is quite expected of a 15.6″ laptop.
All in all, if you want a large screen, mid range machine that is well priced, then this is one of the best laptops for nursing students.
5. HP Pavilion X360 – 15.6″ – Cheapest Suitable Option
We recommend the HP Pavilion X360 as one of the best laptops for nursing students if you are on a tight budget.
It literally costs almost half as much as the Microsoft Surface Pro 6 above.
However, trust us when we say that it is more than adequate for all sorts of nursing tasks and education.
Sure, it may show limitations if you try to explore hobbies like designing, photo editing etc. However, for plain nursing students, this laptop is highly capable.
Like most laptops here, this too is a convertible laptop. It has a hinge rotate mechanism so it turns 360 degrees for Tablet mode.
Again, like the HP Envy X360 above, it is quite impracticable to walk around with a 15.6″ Tablet that weighs 4.41 lbs. Therefore, the convertible feature may not appeal to all. However, it can be used for typing notes or emails etc.
HP Pavilion X360 offers a fairly decent Intel Core i3-8130U processor. There most certainly are cheaper processors out there like the Intel Atom, Celeron or even Pentium processors, however, to save you from frustration, we do not recommend you go for laptops featuring those processors.
Therefore, the lowest possible we recommend is a Core i3 processor particularly from the 8th generation or above. Why? The 8th generation Intel Processor are better than their predecessors by leaps and bounds.
Take for example the fact that the Intel Core i3 from the 7th generation did not have a max turbo frequency. In other words a 7th gen processor like the Core i3-7130U was capped at its base frequency of 2.70 GHz.
On the other hand, the counterparts from the 8th generation i.e Intel Core i3-8130U, have a Turbo Frequency that can boost the speed to 3.4 GHz per core when needed.
Besides a well rounded processor, it offers a large storage of 1 TB HDD. Note that while the storage capacity is large, it is not SSD. Secondly, it offers a rare combination of RAM with 4 GB dedicated RAM and 16 GB of Intel latest Optane RAM.
Lastly, despite being a fairly affordable laptop for its configuration, it also manages to fit an IPS panel screen. IPS screens have richer colors and widest viewing angles as compared to conventional TN panel screens.
All in all, if you are looking for the cheapest possible notebook that should serve you well throughout your study, then this is one of the best laptops for nursing students.
You may also be interested in laptops for simple word processing.
Here we looked at the best laptops for nursing students. We looked at premium laptops like the ASUS Zenbook and Microsoft Surface Pro 6. We also looked at Mid Range options like the ASUS Vivobook and HP Envy X360. Lastly we looked at the affordable notebooks like the HP Pavilion X360.
While they come from different price categories, they all have a few things in common. They are all highly capable nursing laptops.
Secondly, they are all highly portable and mobile laptops that promise a long lasting battery life.
Thirdly, they are all beautiful notebooks with ultra modern looks.
