How To Choose The Right Laptop For Engineering
Field of Study
To begin with, work out if your field of study has any demanding software you will need to run. Is it going to require you to send vast numbers of files or convert large files of pictures?
When you know this, you will have your base level of system requirements. Next, work out if you yourself have any demands. If you are a gamer or music producer, your base level of system requirements might already be higher than your course demands.

Choosing which operating system you prefer is usually a matter of preference. If you have always used an Apple product, you will find it easier to stick to the same operating system. The only exception is if you are using software that is exclusive to either Mac OS or Windows.
The processor is the heart, soul, and brain of your machine. The "Flux Capacitor" if you will. This tiny chip processes millions of complicated decisions and equations every second. These calculations are the only reason your laptop can do anything at all.
This means that the stronger the processor, the more calculations your computer can make, and the quicker everything works. CPU’s are one of the most incredible creations of the computing world. When it comes to CPU’s, it is easy to get bamboozled by the technical jargon. Unless you are a computer nerd (like me), you will only need to focus on 2 or 3 specs.
The first of the three is clock speed. Measured in GHz (Gigahertz), the clock speed is the number of processes your CPU can perform in one second, one GHz being 1,000,000 processes per second. The second is the number of cores.
One of the most critical innovations in the computing world was the invention of the multi-core processor. These processors essentially have two brains working at once.
So, if you have a single-core processor with a clock speed of 3.0 GHz, you will be getting 3,000,000 processes a second. A dual-core processor, working at 2.5 GHz, will give you 5,000,000 processes a second.
It is important to bear in mind, however, that multi-core CPUs are not always the best option. Some software, including CAD and AutoCAD, will only run off one core. In this case, a 3Ghz single-core processor will perform better than a dual-core 2.5ghz processor. Again it comes down to your individual needs.
Finally, if you want to get a little bit more technical, we have threading. Processors that have multiple threads gain an incredible ability. They can essentially create a virtual core. This means that a dual-core processor with the right threading abilities can create an additional 2 cores virtually, boosting the processor up to a quad-core.
When it comes to CPU’s, there has been a bit of a technology arms race between Intel and AMD. Thanks to this, they are the only CPU’s you will be able to find on the market. Both make incredible components.
Intel tends to be more expensive due to its brand name and quality; their processor line is as follows from slowest to fastest. AMD is cheaper and is tailored more towards those who know computers a little bit better.

Simply Put – The more cores, threads, and clock speed, the better usually, unless you use single-core software. In this case, focus on high clock speed single-core CPUs.
During each session spent at your computer, the processor creates lots of temporary data to help it run quickly. This data needs to be accessed as quickly as possible. Think of it as a stored cheat sheet to your computer's processes.
Every time your computer makes a decision, it stores the process it underwent to get the answer. The next time it needs to make the same decisions, it already has a head start. Without that stored temporary data, your computer will still run, but it is going to take more time thinking about every question.
This is where RAM comes in. RAM is your computer's short term memory; it holds the cheat sheet that your computer uses when it needs to process huge numbers of complex processes. When playing games or using demanding software, without good RAM, you are likely to see some slow-down, or in the worst case, you will not be able to do anything.
With RAM, there are two things to look for.
The first is the size of RAM. Ranging from 4gb-64gb, obviously, the more, the better. 8gb will allow you to do most things, but if you want to game or use high-end software, 16gb should be your minimum. 16gb is the sweet spot, one that you will only have to increase upon if you demand a lot from your laptop.
The second thing is the type of RAM. I won’t bore you with the nerdy computer science, but you should at least be looking for DDR3, preferable DDR4. These are the best.
Simply Put – RAM is like a high-speed delivery driver; it holds crucial information and delivers it, lightning-fast to where it needs to go. The more ram you have, the better, just make sure it is DDR3 or DDR4.
The quality and size of your display are going to depend on what you use your laptop for. If you need it to display large images in great detail, you are going to need to spend a little extra to get that quality. For everyone else, you can save money by opting for full HD displays instead of 4k. For most applications, you will not notice the difference.
If you need your laptop to be portable, you might want to look for a smaller screen, 11” or 13” screens are usually what we suggest for portability. You can carry a 15” laptop around, but it can be quite cumbersome. 17” laptops are purely designed as workstations; I would not advise a 17” laptop if you regularly shove your laptop into your backpack.
The last thing to bear in mind with your monitor is the battery draw. A 4k screen, while impressive to look at, draws a lot of power. This means your battery life is going to be much lower on models with a high-quality 4k screen.
Simply Put – Figure out how big your screen needs to be, then figure out whether you prefer quality or battery life. This should help you decide what kind of screen you want.
Storage drives come in two forms.
A Hard Disk Drive or HDD is the standard when it comes to storage. Relatively cheap with the ability to store vast amounts of data, they have been used for years in laptops and computers alike.
Made from a metal platter with a special coating, when the disk spins, your computer can read what is on the disk and access what is stored inside. Due to their low cost, they rarely come with under 500gb of storage. Although SSD's are a lot faster, having an HDD on your laptop will allow you to increase your potential storage massively.

They are, however, significantly more expensive. To have an SSD that holds more than 500gb, you are looking at a serious expense. SSD's are vital when it comes to gaming, high-demand software, and photo and video editing.
Simply Put - If you do not need to store huge amounts of data and files, a smaller SSD is going to be the best bet. If you need to store lots of files and want to keep the price low, go for an HDD. Luckily, lots of laptops now come with a mix a both, which means you can have your large storage covered by your HDD and keep your important quick-to-boot stuff on your SSD.
Keyboard Typing Experience
Everybody has a different typing style, different size hands, fingers and arms, and different levels of flexibility. All this equates to a typing profile. This means it is hard to recommend a keyboard to someone because they probably have a particular style of typing.
There are some aspects to keyboard design that can vary in quality. The resistance of the keys, the style of keyboard, and the “throw,” which is the distance between keys can all be studied.
Mechanical keyboards produce a satisfying click and bounce back, and notebooks generally come with dampened keys, to make them more suitable for office use. If you know what kind of keyboard you like, make sure the laptop you are looking at covers all the bases.

If you have 1000$ to spend, you should aim to get as much as you can for that money.
We always advise stretching as far as possible, as you future proof yourself more. Sure, you might save 200$ going for a laptop with an older component set, but your laptop will age quicker than a newer model. Ultimately this means you will have to replace it sooner.
When it comes to a warranty, not all brands are equal. Do some research on the customer service reputation of any laptop that you buy. If they have excellent customer service and offer a good price warranty extension, BUY IT. I can’t tell you the number of times I have regretted not doing so.
