1. Doxie Go SE – Recommended Battery Operated Portable Scanner
This is hands down one of the best portable scanners for Mac. In fact, this is a scanner that you can use with almost any system including mobile devices like your iPhone or iPad.
Doxie Go SE is a slim and compact device that does not require any connection to a computer to work.
This scanner has a battery as well as has an internal storage that you can use to save all your scans to. The storage is also expandable via the use of the SD card slot.
Basically the way this works is simple.
You can either transfer the file via the SD card, or you can use the WiFi. You can also use the Auto Sync feature with popular cloud services like Dropbox or Google Drive to automatically save your scanner files to your cloud storage.
You can scan up to 400 pages per charge. Furthermore, the internal memory has the capacity to store about 4,000 scans before it needs to sync.
It does come with a few drawbacks though. While it does offer a sheetfed mechanism, it neither has an Automatic Document Feeder, nor does it scan double sided documents automatically, i.e it is not a Duplex Scanner.
In any case, if you are looking for a highly portable, robust and a rather famous scanner, then this is one of the best portable scanners for MAC in 2019.

2. Canon imageFORMULA P-215II – Portable Sheetfed ADF Scanner
ImageFORMULA P-215ll is an another highly recommended portable scanner in this list. While it is NOT battery operated like the Doxie Go SE above, it does have a few features that make it stand out.
One of the best features it offers is the 20 sheet Automatic document feeder. With this, you can automatically batch scan multiple documents including receipts, business card and even photos.
The scanner has a speed of about 15 pages per minute. Compared to the high speed ADF scanner which have a speed of about 35 pages per minute, this is slow.
However, considering the fact that this is highly portable makes up for the slower ADF speed.
On top of that, this is duplex scanner and as such it can both sides of the documents as well.
While the vanilla model does not come with a WiFi. You can invest on a separate WU10 Wi-Fi unit to allow this scanner to interface wirelessly.
Of course the biggest drawback of this scanner is that it is not battery operated. You have to have it connected to your MAC or the power supply in order to use it.

3. Brother DS-620 – Most Affordable Portable Scanner
If you came here looking for the most affordable portable scanner for Mac in this list, then this should top your list.
Consider this as the bare minimum of a portable scanner. It does not offer WiFi, it has no battery and no SD card support. The only way to connect this scanner is via USB cable.
On top of that this NOT a duplex scanner and does not feature an ADF.
However, as far as the affordability goes nothing can top this. You can carry this around anywhere you want for scanning receipts and documents.
Despite its very low price tag, it also features the OCR technology for creating searchable/editable scanned files.
Obviously this is not something that you would use in an office environment where you have a large volume to documents to scan on a daily basis.
Instead, this is personal scanner that you can carry around for occasional scan. All in all, if you want the cheapest option, then this is among the best portable scanners for Mac.
4. Doxie Flip – Portable Flatbed Scanner
While the rest of scanners mentioned here are all sheetfed scanners, the Doxie Flip is a portable FLATBED scanner.
For starters, note that the physical size of the scanner is quite small. It is ideal for scanning photos with the size of 4×6″ or A6.
However, another function it serves is the detachable lid scanning. Since this is a battery powered scanner, you can remove the lid, and scan any surface, object, or piece of document that you want.
Effectively, when the lid is removed, this scanner becomes a wand scanner. In fact, compared to a normal wand scanner, this is far more accurate since you don’t have to move your hand across the surface to scan.
The scanner comes with 4GB SD Card and an SD card reader. While it does NOT offer WiFi, you can use the SD card to interface and transfer the files to your MAC.
Why choose a flatbed over the sheetfed scanners? Basically it boils down to your personal needs. With sheetfed scanners, you are only limited to scanning loose sheets and documents.
With a flatbed scanner, you can all kinds of objects and materials. Of course, the drawback of the flatbed scanners are that they require manual work (i.e placing the document, and then pressing the scan button, then removing the document).
The sheetfed scanners, on the other hand, can scan a document automatically.
In the end, if flatbed scanner is what you need, then this is one of the best portable scanners for Mac in 2019.
5. Epson Workforce ES-60W – Affordable Battery Operated Scanner
Epson Workforce ES-60W is in direct competition with the Doxie Go SE we saw above.
While it offers almost the same feature sets and is much cheaper than the Doxie Go SE, it lacks in one critical feature: it does not offer an internal storage, nor does it support an SD card storage.
All your scans have to be transferred to your Mac directly since it cannot store any scans inside itself.
Other than that, this is scanner goes toe-to-toe with the Doxie Go. It offers a rechargeable battery, offers WiFi scanning, a robust and accurate OCR software as well as USB connectivity.
