Just like when we first found fire and discovered electricity, we are entering the dawn of a new age. The digital age. The internet is the singular most important creation we have brought to the world so far.

We can converse with people on the other side of the planet instantly. The dot.com bubble brought the world into the fold. People are catching on that now is the time to get on board.

The internet enhances almost every aspect of our day to day lives; we all use it; in fact, we produce 2.5 Quintillion bytes of data every day.

What I am going to talk about in this article is the importance of choosing the correct laptop as a blogger, or in fact, as any kind of worker who is location independent.

Your laptop is the most essential tool you have; without it, your earning potential drops drastically.

Do I Need a Specific Laptop for Blogging or Vlogging?

Bloggers and Vloggers are both extremely reliant on their workhorse laptops. However, they both require different things from their laptops.

There are some good laptops for blogging that will not perform well enough for some of the things a Vlogger might need. The best laptop for video blogging might have a better graphics card and more RAM.

The best laptop for blogging is one that can deal with the workload you will be putting on it. You can save a lot of money buying a blogging laptop if you do not need it to perform tasks like playing video games and video/photo editing.

Choosing the Right Laptop for Blogging

There is no one size fits all answer when it comes to the best laptop for a blogger. You can buy a laptop with as few specs or as many specs as you like or is necessary.

The first thing you need to learn is what the different components inside a laptop do. When you know what they do and their purpose. You then need to figure out what you need your laptop to do for you.

Once you know both, you can look for laptops that have a high spec in the areas that you need them too, and low spec in the areas you don’t. This is the best way to save money, whilst ensuring your laptop performs as well, or better than you need it to do.

Your laptop is the tool of your trade, my advice to you is to go for the best you can afford, not only does this give you more earning potential and a slicker machine, but you also future-proof yourself more.

Here, I am going to break a laptop down into a laptop's individual components and show you what they do, and when it is important to max out each element depending on a range of tasks.

Processor

Let’s start with the processor, often known as the CPU. This is the heart of any computing system. It also has the highest impact on the performance of any component.

The better your processor, the faster your computer. It is called a processor because it processes billions of lightning-fast decisions every second.

When you are looking at processors, you will see several important numbers that you should pay attention too.

Clock Speed

Clock speed is a complex subject, one that you do not really need to know the science behind. Basically, the higher the clock speed, the more decisions your CPU’s brain can make a second. Usually measured in GHz.

Cores

In the old days, CPU’s only ever had one core. A core is a processing unit that aids the CPU brain processes its millions of decisions. Nowadays, computers have evolved.

Dual and Quad cores are now the norms on any decent rig. If you look into higher-end and industrial machines, you may find some octa-cores. The better the quality of your cores, the faster your computer will be.

Brand

In computing power, there has only ever really been two rivals. Intel and AMD. These two companies have been in a computing powered arms race since they began. They are the largest producers of CPU's, and thanks to their intense competition, innovation in the scene happens at a lightning pace.

Intel Cores From Slowest to Fastest:
  • M3
  • M5
  • i3
  • i5
  • i7
  • i9
AMD Cores from Slowest to Fastest
  • E2
  • A6
  • A9
  • A10
  • A12
  • FX

If I were looking for the best laptop for blogging and writing, I would advise an m5/i3 or higher from Intel or an A6 or higher from AMD.

If I were looking for the best laptops for blogging and vlogging, I would push for an i5 from intel and an A9 from AMD. The increase in processing power will help you with any video editing software, as well as transferring high-def files.

Storage

Storage traditionally comes in two separate forms. HDD and SSD.

HDD

A hard drive is basically a metal platter with a unique magnetic coating. This can store your data. When you need to access it, this plate spins, and a laser reads your stored data, allowing you to open up that picture of your dog from 3 years ago.

Your HDD drive is usually where you will find most of your computer's data storage. All your photos documents, program files. They are all found here. HDD can range from 100gb to 12TB. Due to size constraints, you will usually find ones between 100gb and 1tb inside a laptop.

SSD

Your SSD essentially has all the same uses as a standard HDD hard drive, the difference? The data on an SSD is stored on special flash-memory chips that are interconnected. In straightforward terms, they work in the same way your USB thumb drive does.

SSD’s are typically more expensive than HDDs. This is because they are much smaller and also perform at a much higher speed than a typical HDD. They are also usually much more expensive.

Both types of storage are incredibly important. They load up your system and allow you to store and access files. They do, however, have slightly different features that perform better than the other.

The main difference is the cost per storage. For the price of a 500gb SSD, you could probably get a 4TB HDD. Again, this is something you are going to have to work out before purchasing.

If you are buying a laptop for vlogging, you will need a lightning-fast SSD with a high capacity for storing high def content. This is going to be a significant cost factor you need to consider. I know several people who have bought laptops with quick processors and good GPU's, only to get frustrated when their SSD's are not up to scratch.

Memory

Memory or RAM, which refers to the hardware sticks containing "Random Access Memory" is an incredibly important factor when looking at good laptops for blogging. RAM is a type of memory that the CPU can access quickly to store and retrieve temporary data.

Your SSD or HDD, which saves huge pieces of data, is your long term memory. Your RAM is your short term memory. It stores certain pieces of useful data inside it temporarily, which makes that data lightning fast to access.

Simplified, RAM is like a super-fast delivery driver; it holds important information and sends it to where it is needed quicker than any other method.

Ram comes in different sizes, 1gb,2gb,4gb,8gb,16gb

As a rule of thumb, you should have at least 4gb ram. With this web browsing, word processing and video streaming are all a piece of cake.

IF you game or need to use slightly more demanding applications, I suggest you go for 8gb.

If you need the absolute best laptop for vlogging, you should look for 16gb of ram, it will be overkill in 80% of situations, but this future proofs you and ensures you get a seamless experience.

Keyboard Typing Experience

As a blogger, you are going to be spending longer on the computer than your average person. It is surprising then, how little attention people pay to their keyboard. Aside from your laptop performing well enough for the work you throw at it, this is probably the next most important thing to get right.

Everybody has different sized hands, flexibility, and wrist mobility. This means that you should really think about the keyboard on your new blogging laptop. You are going to be putting some serious hours writing on this keyboard.

“Throw” is the term used to describe the spacing between keys on your keyboard. Have you ever used someone else’s computer or laptop and found it unnatural to type on? Like you are hitting all the wrong keys? This is usually because the throw on their keyboard is different from yours.

The other important thing to consider with your laptop is the resistance, which is how hard you have to press the key and how quickly it depresses when you let go. Everybody will have a different preference here, and once you get it right, you will find that typing is a lot more enjoyable, and you make a lot more mistakes.

Battery Life

Batteries have come a long way in the last couple of years, and even large, powerful workhorses can hold a great battery life.

People in business who spend a significant amount of time traveling are usually at the mercy of their laptop battery life. If you are looking for a blogger laptop specifically, you will probably be in the same boat.

Unfortunately, even though this digital world progresses rapidly, the adaptation of plugs for everybody to use seems to be woefully far behind.

Luckily, with improvements to CPU’s and a range of other component innovations, battery life is getting better and better. Most good laptops should be able to see you through an 8 hour period, which is meant to roughly equate to a workday.

Many laptops aimed at the digital worker on the move, however, boast batteries that can give you up to 14 hours without needing to juice back up.

Display Panel

Your display is your screen. It is what you will be looking at every time you fire up your laptop. Getting it right is important. This is one of the hardest decisions. It is also the one that requires you to really think about your needs for your machine.

If you are looking for the best laptop for blogging and video editing, you are going to need a higher-res screen. If you are looking for the best blogging laptop for photo editing and gaming, the refresh rate will be important.

When deciding on your laptop screen, there are categories to bear in mind.

Screen Size

First, chose the screen size you want. If you are looking for the best laptop for travel blogging, you might want to go for a smaller screen like a 13".

Screen Type

Next, you will need to decide if you need a screen with features, do you need a touchscreen or a 2in1 tablet-style screen? Does it need a high refresh rate?

Screen Resolution

Finally, you need to decide on the quality if your screen resolution, aside from the graphics card and CPU, this is where your potential choices will affect how much you spend the most.

If you want to be able to watch movies in 4k and game at 60fps with a fast refresh, you are going to have to fork out the dough.

If, however, you only need your laptop for work and word processing, dropping the screen quality will not only lower the price of your laptop, it should also increase the battery life of your machine.

Weight

Pretty simple here. If you travel often and take your laptop with you, you should aim to choose a laptop that weighs as little as possible.

Fortunately, with constant innovation in the computing industry, laptops are getting cheaper, and parts are getting lighter. It doesn’t cost a fortune to buy an ultraportable anymore, as you will see in our reviews.

Connectivity Quality

Many years ago, I swapped from working in an office, to travel writing and blogging. Back then, I had an old Lenovo. The Wi-Fi range on the card in that laptop must have been about 3 meters, and it drove me crazy.

I would have to work lying on the floor of my hotel room or sitting in strange positions in cafes and airports.

Make sure you look at the Wi-Fi card in any potential laptop you are looking at buying, especially if you are looking for the best laptop for travel blogging, as you will most likely be piggybacking off whatever free wi-fi you can find.

Research the card in your potential choice and find some online reviews for that card, trust me.

Extra Features

There may be some additional features that you need from your laptop that are specific to you. You might need a higher number of USB ports then the usual laptop has. An HDMI port may be crucial.

You might want it to come with some built-in programs. Make sure you have all of your requirements written down or at least memorized before you begin researching what laptop you are going to buy.

Price & Warranty

One of the most deciding factors is your budget. It does not matter if you want that all singing all dancing 4k monster that costs $5,000… if you don't have $5,000. My advice is to go through all the above factors, deciding what you want for each section. Then when you have your requirements, find what you can in your price range.

Most laptop companies come with warranties, some are good, some are bad. Unfortunately, the best machines do not always pair up with companies who offer the best warranties, so you may want to do some digging here.

One thing I would always suggest, however, is to buy the extended warranty if they offer it. In my experience, with the amount of time I spend using my laptop, I tend to run them into the ground every 3-4 years; the typical warranty tends to be around the 2-year mark.

Extended warranties always pay for themselves in the end.

Apple, as a brand, needs no introduction. Their machines are sleek and beautiful, they are easy to use, and they have been a firm favorite of many bloggers ever since the first generation. Apple knows that bloggers want their laptops to be sophisticated and stylish. They also know that most of us want as much raw power and technology you can fit under the hood too.

The 13.3-inch Macbook Air is their answer. The 13.3-inch screen they use pops with color, contrast, and clarity, thanks to Apple's Retina technology.

This screen and everything else is propelled by an i5 Intel Core processor, which shreds through multi-thread processing. To make things even better, this CPU is one of the first to benefit from apples new operating system Turbo Boost button. This turbo boost allows your core to work quicker, aided by the 256GB SSD 16gb of Ram and 1TB storage.

The MacBook Air, like its namesake, so obviously suggests, is ridiculously light. At only 1.25kg, it is incredible that Apple can even fit the powerful components that give the Air its high level of performance. The battery life on the Air is no joke either, allowing you to run your Air for 12 hours of a single charge.

Apple has introduced its new butterfly mechanism in the new Macbook Air, and this system provides up to 4x as much key stability than a traditional keyboard. Paired with the individually lit backlit keys and an ambient light sensor that helps you out in low light environments, the keyboards on the MacBook Air has been designed with writers in mind.

Thunderbolt 3, or USB-C, is fast becoming the port that we use for everything. With 40gb/s bandwidth speed, this makes transferring files a breeze. This makes the MacBook Air the best laptop for blogging and video editing. It is also great for blogging and photo editing too.

Finally, as a brand renowned for their affinity to music, the speakers on the air are simply incredible. For their size, they put out enough sound to make watching movies a dream, conference calls come through crystal clear, and music sounds great.

The only downside to the Air is the downside that every Apple product has. It is expensive. If, however, you are looking for the best laptop for a blogger, one that performs well at everything, the Air is a perfect choice.

If you are on the market for a cheap laptop that performs well above its price-tag, the Vivobook outshines all of its competitors. This laptop has a snazzy orange, a green colorway that makes it a real eye-pleaser.

The performance hidden inside the chassis is pretty impressive too. The cheapest model comes with a strong i5=8625U and 8 GB of ram, paired with a 256gb SSD. Even though this is the cheaper option, this is still enough to keep up with all but the most demanding of tasks.

If you fork out a little bit more money, you can go for the mid-range VivoBook, and this comes with a stomping i7-8565U and an Nvidia GeForce MX250 graphics card. This turns your VivoBook into a pretty capable gaming machine.

Port-wise, you get two USB 2.0 ports on one side and a USB 3.1, microSD, HDMI, and USB-C on the other. This is a good range of ports, in our opinion.

The 1080p display is made all the better by the gorgeous slim bezels along each side. The screen is sharp, and the contrast is excellent. You will not get the same quality that you do out of say, the Macbook Air and its Retina Display, but for the price tag, the display is decent.

If you want to spend just that little bit more, you can max out the storage and the RAM, increasing them to 512gb and 12gb, respectively. The top of the range VivoBook is a beast, but it is the lower spec choice that gets our seal of approval.

To max out the VivoBook specs, you could get a better value for money machine. The base model Vivobook however, is by far the best value for money machine at its price tag.

The Acer Aspire 5 Slim takes the crown for the best video editing laptop, but it does so in a strange way. The reason the Acer Aspire 5 Slim is such a fantastic laptop is the configurable options that come with it.

Acer allows you to order this laptop in over 22 different configurations…22! From dual-core AMD CPUs all the way to beefed-up overclocked i7's, from 4gb of ram to 12gb of ram. You can really build this laptop into any configuration you want.

Need to do a lot of video editing, get the model with the 512gb SSD and i7 Processor. Want to play lots of games? Throw in the GeForce MX250 graphics card and 12gb of RAM.

Acer has always done a good job when it comes to laptop design. The slim is no different. It feels light and thin, even though it has a 15" screen. The aluminum feel is smooth and cool, too, although it can become a bit of a fingerprint magnet.

The 15.6” inch screen also bends all the way back past 180 degrees, and this allows you to lay the slim on a table flat. The IPS panel gives amazing viewing angles from all directions, and Acer's innovative "ComfyView" design lowers glare massively.

The keyboard on the Slim is roomy and has a good level of backlighting. The keyboard even comes with a 10 number keypad, although this feels a little bit squished. The keys feel nice to type on and give nice feedback and spring during typing.

Port-wise On the left-hand side of the Slim, you'll find a pair of USB 3.0 Type-A ports, along with Ethernet, HDMI, and a USB 3.1 and a USB-c port. On the right is 2 USB 2.0 ports.

What you get with the Aspire 5 Slim is the perfect building blocks of a laptop. Everything that comes as standard is excellent quality and performs well. This means that all that you have to do is to pick the components relevant to you, and you end up with a really personalized laptop. Perfect for Vloggers and Gamers who like that little bit of customization.

Microsoft did a good job of breaking the mold when they designed the Surface. They then managed to take that original groundbreaking design, and revamp it, and make it even better. The current Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, is the most impressive Surface to date.

The ultra-thin is exceptionally light, and it fits into any bag with ease making it a traveling writer or blogger's dream. Weighing in at only 1.26kg, it is hard to find a laptop with so much tech squeezed into such a little space.

The display on the Surface Laptop 3 is simply breath-taking too, with a 2256x1504 resolution maxing at 267 pixels per inch this is a screen made to impress. With a 3:2 aspect ratio, every color is perfect, every dark appears correctly, and every contrast is pulled off to perfection.

With the option to pick from Intel's new range of 10th gen processors, the surface laptop can be 3x more powerful than the Macbook Air. The Surface is an exceptionally smooth and quick to use laptop.

You will be able to play any games that are well optimized at a decent frame rate too. However, without a dedicated graphics card, you should not buy this laptop if you are hoping to do some serious video editing.

The surface laptop also suffers a little in the battery department, lasting just 8 hours compared to the Macbook Airs 12. The saving grace here is that with Microsoft's new charging technology, you can now charge from 0-80% in just 1 hour, which is pretty impressive.

Port-wise, you get a USB-C port 2 USB 3.0 ports and a headphone jack.

The Surface Laptop manages to impress in subtle ways. It just feels right. As a writer myself, I spend hours at the keyboard, and of all the laptops I have tested, nothing felt quite as right as the Surface.

Thanks to the options for a robust i7 processor, the Dell Inspiron 5593 is an extremely powerful all-rounder. It has a dedicated AMD graphics card and great build quality. This makes it an easy pick for the best laptop for blogging and video editing.

The lid comes in a brushed metallic design, which gives the laptop a high-end feel. This isn't, however, an Ultrabook or a top-end competitor. This is a laptop that has a little extra chunk.

We don't mind, though, because, for the price tag, you are not going to find anything with this kind of processing power. It also gives the laptop a bit more sturdiness; throwing it in your backpack is not a worry.

The keyboard is a bit of a sore point, being a little tricky to get used too. Once you are used to it, you will have no problem, but it has a steep learning curve to begin with, thanks to the unusual throw on the keys.

Port-wise, you get 2 x USB 3.0, 1 x USB 2.0, Combo audio jack, HDMI, and an SD card reader.

There isn't much to say about the Inspiron 5593, it is simply a no-frills powerhouse of a laptop, and it comes at a price that is pretty much unbeatable.

The Asus Chromebook Flip C302 is the only Chromebook to make it onto our list. As a full-time writer, the drawbacks of using a Chromebook usually outweigh the great price you can pick them up for. With only 4gb of RAM and 64GB storage, this is not one you'd buy if you have substantial storage needs, that being said, it does have some fantastic positives.

Chromebooks in their nature are immune to bloating, that means that they remain lightning-fast from the second you open the box to the second you turn it off for the last time. The design is sleek, and all over aluminum is a nice improvement over the cheap plastic seen in most Chromebooks.

It weighs only 1.2kg, making it the perfect travel companion, and for anyone that enjoys using a tablet, the c302 also flips into tablet mode in an instant.

Performance-wise you have to remember that you are never going to see benchmark breaking speeds in a Chromebook. That being said, for word processing and internet browsing, they are wicked fast. The c302 is no exception. Using the new Dual-Core M Series, this little Chromebook is capable of reaching 2.2Ghz.

The last, and perhaps most surprising selling point of the C302, is the keyboard. The keyboard on the Asus is excellent. It may be one of the most satisfying keyboards I have ever had the pleasure to type on. It really did surprise me. The throw and feedback feel just right, and the backlit keyboard is great in the dark.

At the end of the day, if you want a lightning-fast word processor, with the ability to watch movies and browse the internet all at a fraction of the cost of the other laptops in this list, the Asus c302 flip, is my recommendation.
