10 Best i7 Laptops: Reviewed, Rated & Compared

The computer processing unit (CPU), or processor, is the heart of any computing system. It controls the thousands upon thousands of complex decisions that your computer has to make every single second in order to run.

Due to its importance, there has been a global arms race between two tech giants for many years now. This arms race has had one sole purpose, to create the fastest processor, year in, year out. One of these tech giants is Intel, and sitting near to the top of their range of high-end consumer-grade CPU's is the i7 processor.

Advantages & Applications of Core i7 Processors

If you use your computer for demanding tasks and software, like gaming, video editing, deep learning, or AI tech, you will need a processor to handle the strain. An i7 processor is about as good as you can get besides the step up to an i9.

I7 processors have a much higher price to performance ratio, however, which makes it the logical choice for most high-end users.

Important Considerations For Buying an i7 Laptop

Intended Application

The very first thing you should work out before looking at any laptops is your intended application. This means you need to know how much of a demand you are going to be placing on your machine. This will allow you to figure out roughly what kind of spec list you will require from your laptop.

For example, if you plan on doing hardcore gaming, a strong processor paired with a good graphics card and RAM is crucial.

Core i7 Specs
Number of Cores

First, you have the number of cores, both physical and virtual. Every core can work independently of the others. A virtual core is a core that has been created by your processor.

Every core will have its own clock speed. A dual-core will have double the clock-speed as the label says. A dual-core 2.4ghz, for example, can technically run at 4.8Ghz.

Line/Series

The line and the series relate to what level the processor is. In this article, we are talking about an i7, which is near the top of Intel's i-processor range. The range goes i3,i5,i7,i9.

Clock Speed

Clock speed relates to how many decisions, or processes, your CPU can make in a single second. This is measured in GHz, with 1 GHz being 1000 processes a second.

Generation

Every couple of years, Intel and AMD release a new generation of processors. This is essentially an upgrade of a current range of processors. We are currently in the 10th generation. A 10th generation i7 for example, is much more capable than a 7th gen i7.

Other Laptop Features
RAM

Your RAM is perhaps the second most important component in your computer. Its role is supporting every other component by storing cheat sheets of data, which allow the other components to process tasks in a much quicker, much more efficient manner.

The higher the RAM, the smoother everything else can run. The best version of RAM is DDR4 Flash, and you should be aiming for at least 8GB to support an i7 processor.

GPU

Your Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) or Graphics Card is the star player when it comes to visuals. If you want high definition displays and a seamless experience when gaming or editing, your graphics card is going to have to be top-notch.

The newest generation of GPU is the RTX series from Nvidia; this has ray-tracing capabilities, which are the cutting edge in terms of graphics potential. The GTX series is also massively popular, with AMD models making up the rest.

Storage Space

Storage space relates to the place on your computer that you store all of the files it needs to run, as well as all of the files that you decide to install. There are two types of storage space used on computers today, HDD and SSD.

HDD is the older of the two; this type of storage comes with a huge capability for space. HDD storage is slow and outdated. It is, however, extremely cheap.

SSD is the new kid on the block. This type of storage can transfer data at an incredibly quick speed. SSD is the preferred method of storage when you prioritize performance; however, it costs a lot more than HDD storage.

Battery Life

The importance of battery life to you individually will depend upon your own needs. If you like to travel a lot and take your laptop with you, a higher battery life will be much more valuable. A strong battery life usually comes at a cost, though. Either performance will have to be dialed down, or the laptop's overall cost will have to be higher.

One other thing to look for is the new age of quick-charge technology. This technology allows for charging at a break-neck speed. Often you can charge your battery from 0-80% in under an hour.

Screen Size

Another factor that is personal to you is the screen size. The larger the screen, the easier it is to make out smaller details, and the more screen real estate you get. It does usually raise the cost of the machine.

A smaller screen might make more sense if you are looking for a more portable solution.

Display/Graphics

The higher the resolution, the higher the need for a strong graphics card and the more power your laptop will drain. Laptops with 4k screens and good GPU's usually make better desktops than they do portable laptops.

1080p screens are the most popular option as they provide the perfect balance between cost and performance.

Design

Laptops come in a range of different designs depending on their target audience. Dell, for example, makes sleek matte black laptops that look incredible in an executive office. MSI and ASUS make flashy gaming laptops equipped with RGB lighting and a design that makes a statement. Lenovo makes laptops that appear ordinary, but under the surface lies a raging sun.

The design you prefer will depend on you, so take some time to figure out what you like.

Size & Weight

High-end components are usually heavier than less expensive ones. This means that computers with more firepower will usually have a lot more weight to them. To reduce the weight, you will have to fork out more money for components that have been designed to be portable.

Build Quality

The parts that they use and the material they craft the laptop from is massively important when it comes to build quality. Laptops that have cheap hinges and weak shells are much more likely to break over the years. Look for brands that have a strong reputation for quality.

Warranty

Computers go wrong; it's a simple fact of life. Nobody who has used a computer for a long period of time has done so without running into a single hardware problem. The saving grace when this happens is how strong your warranty is.

Good brands give good warranties as they are completely convinced that the product they are offering is of high quality.

Price

Finally, we look at the price to performance ratio. This is how strong the parts and laptop perform for the dollars you have spent.

Some computer part manufacturers are notorious for charging too much for their products, and some are notorious for creating parts that perform well above their price tag.

When the right parts are chosen for the right price, we have a laptop that performs extremely well, with a lower price tag than you would expect.

If you fly the Apple flag and prefer to use Apple products, you are in luck. In our opinion, the best i7 laptop overall falls to the flagship Apple laptop, the MacBook Pro. This is a laptop that has been designed from the ground up, broken down, and then designed again. This constant level of innovative rebuilding has lead to the creation of one of the most powerful consumer laptops on the planet.

This newest iteration of MacBook Pro has a four-core 10th generation intel i7 processor. You also have the potential to add a whopping 64GB of RAM to that and up to 4TB of SSD storage. To max this laptop out will cost a pretty penny, but the result is a simply unbeatable machine.

Then you have the Retina display, quite simply put, the most gorgeous screen we have ever seen on a laptop. The rich, vivid display is fluid and stunning to look at from any angle. This is a screen that is designed to be gawked at.

Apple has one of the strongest research and development teams globally, and they really listen to their customers. This shows in the redesigning of the old-style butterfly keyboard. The new Magic keyboard uses new scissor mechanics, and it feels incredibly responsive and a joy to type on.

One big change that Apple has made, one that can be seen as bold or foolish depending on which side of the fence you sit on, is the removal of legacy ports. Thunderbolt 3 is the new king, and we support that claim. With its superior transfer speeds and reliability, Apple is once again leading the charge in terms of innovation.

The speakers on the MacBook Pro are outstanding too; for such a thin and portable laptop, they can put out a lot of sounds, and as to be expected from a company founded on music, it sounds awesome.

Now the only down-side to the MacBook Pro is the cost. This is not a cheap machine, and in order to really max out the spec, you will need deep pockets to do so.

Their ThinkPad range has revolutionized the standard work laptop scene over the last decade, and at the top of that range is the ThinkPad p71, the pinnacle of performance.

This laptop comes with an insane spec list. To start with, you get your Quad-Core Intel i7 Processor, an insanely strong processor. Backing that processor up, you have 64GB of RAM and a ridiculous 4 TB SSD. Combined, this gives the P71 the power to undertake any logical task and obliterate it.

Finally, you have the professional-grade Quadro M620M, one of the most powerful Quadro Professional cards known to man, with its own 2GB of VRAM.

Every single ThinkPad Laptop has a journey through 21 MIL-SPEC testing processes that ensure that the laptop can withstand even the harshest environments. This is a laptop that can survive arctic cold and desert heat.

You also get Lenovos insanely good 3-year warranty covering you for almost every type of damage and failure. This is one of the reasons why Lenovo has become the poster boy for workplace laptops.

Next, we have an option tailored towards those that have a set budget of around $1000. This 15.6-inch touchscreen laptop comes equipped with the latest-generation i7 processor and a very capable 16GB DDR4 RAM. It also has a 512GB SSD that allows for a silky smooth user experience.

You can feel the Dell quality in this laptop too, even though it has a lower price tag than many of the other options on this list, it doesn't feel that way. You get a really nice, well-spaced keyboard that has lots of throw and well-placed keys.

The touchscreen is a great addition, too, and helps add another layer of usability and function to the Inspiron. This means you can really interact with your tasks.

In terms of the ports, you get a healthy selection, including USB 3, USB 2.0, and HDMI, as well as a headphone jack and an RJ-45.

Next, we have the laptop that we think scores best in terms of pound for pound dollar to performance, the Asus ZenBook 13.

Asus is another brand with an incredible pedigree for making amazing laptops and technology. A lot of the other laptops on other lists we have created are made by Asus.

The ZenBook 13 is an exciting offering. Asus has put some real thought into the innovation here and has replaced the standard trackpad with a touchscreen display that can be used as a second monitor or to customize with programmable commands and buttons. This is a nice touch and can be used in endless ways to aid the user.

It isn't just the second screen that is fancy either. With a 10th generation i7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 512GB SSD, there is no lack of processing power here. What makes this spec list even more impressive is the fact that it all fits into the ultra-slim bezeled profile of a 13-inch laptop that only weighs 2.8lbs. You get Nvidia discrete graphics onboard, too, with the MX250 card providing excellent graphical prowess.

This makes this laptop a portable powerhouse full of innovative tech, and it doesn't stop there. With the 3 degrees raised hinge design, air-flow and ergonomics are increased to allow the laptop to stay cool and positioned in a way that is easy to type on and comfortable.

The ZenBook is another laptop that also undergoes rigorous MIL-STD military testing to ensure that it can survive in any situation. This makes the ZenBook the perfect portable workstation for those who have to work in harsh environments.

The ZenBook scores highly in every single scenario, so it is easy to see how it wins this spot. It's portable, powerful, and full of innovation.

The next slot is the best portable i7 laptop. This is the laptop we would pick if we often traveled but still need a highly powerful laptop to enable us to work wherever we are, be it a train or a plane or bus station.

The LG Gram is an interesting laptop. When we first heard about the super-powerful ultra-portable laptop offering by LG, we were a little skeptical. LG is not as well established in the laptop tech world as the other brands, after all.

We were astonished by how well the Gram turned out. This 17-inch laptop packs an almighty punch, which is almost impossible to believe when you feel how lightweight and thin the Gram actually is.

You wouldn't believe that inside was a 10th gen i7 with a 1TB m.2 SSD and 16GB RAM. The screen is gorgeous, too, with Iris Plus 4k level content looking absolutely dreamy. What's even more incredible is the way that this laptop manages to hold nearly 17 hours of consistent battery life on a full charge.

The Gram has moved into the future alongside Apple, swapping to primarily Thunderbolt 3 ports, which allow for a much faster transfer of speed. The speakers are no joke either, utilizing DTS:X tech to provide 3D audio rendering regardless of whether you listen via headphones or speakers.

The keyboard is one of the nicest we have ever had the pleasure of typing on, too, with a 4 column numeric keypad with illuminated keys, making it easy to type in any light conditions.

One final selling point of the LG Gram is the enhanced security they have installed. The fingerprint reader protects your laptop from intruders, and the inbuilt firewall and security systems are top of the range.

If you need a laptop that can keep up with your busy lifestyle, this ultraportable king is the choice we would choose.

For those who spend more time editing, shooting enemies, racing opponents, and building bases, you need a performance laptop that can undertake any task with ease.

MSI follows the same philosophy. Their focus when it comes to laptop design is to create a battleship. MSI knows that looks are not important, so they spend their money developing innovative solutions that put their laptops at the forefront of gaming tech.

The GL65 Leopard is no exception. Equipped with a 10th gen i7, with 16GB RAM and an RTX 2070, it is the most powerful laptop on this list in terms of graphical performance.

These top-shelf components mean that the screen can comfortably run at 144hz even with the IPS level of quality.  This screen is breathtaking. You get a perfectly low frame rate at ultra settings, all while ensuring that the graphic quality remains exceptionally high, showcasing every stunning detail.

High-performance parts create a lot of heat, and that is especially true with the GL65 Leopard. Luckily, with seven heat pipes and an adaptive air system, MSI has you covered, and the result is a laptop that disperses heat efficiently and easily, keeping the laptop cool under pressure.

If you need a laptop with unrivaled performance, this is where we would spend our money.

Core i7 vs. Other Intel Core Processors:

  • i7 vs. i3
The difference between an i7 and an i3 processor is vast. An i3 processor is capable of undertaking basic tasks and functions with ease, but if you put them under strain by gaming or editing, they crumble under pressure.
  • i7 vs. i5
The difference between an i7 and i5 is a bit more subtle; i5 machines can be competent when it comes to things like gaming, where a strong GPU is more important. When it comes to processor-heavy tasks, like machine learning or editing, however, an i5 will not cut it.
  • i7 vs. i9
The i9 is an incredible bit of processing technology, but it suffers from being number one in pricing. The i9 is the best of the best, which means it costs more than it is worth. The i7, on the other hand, is well priced for its performance level.

Intel Core i7 Laptop Price Ranges Compared

The price of your i7 laptop will depend entirely on the supporting components that sit alongside the processor. At the higher end, you will be able to max out RAM and Storage, but these laptops will come with a huge price tag upwards of $1500.

For between 1000$ and $1500, you should be able to get a strong i7 processor with normal levels of RAM and SSD.

For $1000, you will have to sacrifice on storage and RAM.

The only exception to these is when laptops go on sale or when you purchase your laptop from a renewed program like the one Amazon has.

People Also Ask (FAQs)

Is Core i7 worth the extra money?

This will depend entirely upon your usage. If you like to game, or you edit video, photos, or music, an i7 processor will provide you with a much smoother experience. If these things are important to you, then the i7 core is definitely worth the extra money.

How can I check my processor generation?

The processor generation is in the code of the processor. A 10750H, for example, is the 10th generation, whereas a 9750H is the 9th generation.

Which generation of Core i7 laptop is best?

The more recent the generation of processor, the better it will perform. A 10th generation processor, for example, is miles apart from a 7th generation processor. Always try to buy the newest generation where possible.

What type of maintenance do these laptops need?

Simple maintenance is all that is necessary to keep your laptops fresh. This means keeping them away from heat sources, dust, and water. It also means occasionally cleaning the fans out with an aerosol cleaner. They only cost around $1.

Where is the best place to buy these Core i7 laptops?

We always recommend Amazon due to their excellent returns policy, competitive pricing, and speedy delivery.
