How Long Do Computer Monitors Last? (Different Types Guide)

Compared to newer models, CRT monitors are less efficient, usually heavier and bulkier, and not expected to last as long as other kinds of displays. In addition, their lifespans can be shortened due to overheating, which can be a common problem for CRT monitors. 

LED (Light Emitting Diode) Monitor 

LED monitors could last for up to 20 years when used for an average of 8 hours a day. This translates to between 80,000 - 120,000, which is an outstanding lifespan for a monitor! OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) Monitor 

There isn't an exact answer for how long OLED monitors will last, but with decent usage, a model could last for as many as 100,000 hours, which might be between 8 - 15 years with regular daily use. If used too much and too often, the components may break down faster, shortening this estimation.

OLEDs could also develop burn-in towards the end of their lifespan. Unlike LCD and LED monitors, OLEDs do not use a backlight, which improves image contrast, brightness, and response times. As they are a newer technology, OLED monitors tend to be more expensive than LEDs. 

Factors Affecting The Lifespan Of Monitors 

There are a few environmental and usage variables that could impact how well your monitor is able to work and, therefore, how long you can expect them to last.

Here are some helpful tips to keep your monitor running as well as possible for as long as possible. 

Banish Dust and Debris 

Dust build-up around the air vents will lead to overheating. This is a massive problem for all kinds of technology, as heat will damage the components and stop the monitor from working. Regularly dust the room your computer is kept in, and especially keep the area around the monitor as clean as possible.  

Once a month is a good target for how often the vents on your monitor should be cleaned. This can be done easily with a damp cloth, a brush, or a vacuum cleaner attachment. Avoid using detergent and take care not to damage the plastic.  


Consider the best room to keep a computer in carefully. It must be kept away from regular high temperatures and not in a room that is too humid. Avoid placing it in a busy area where liquid could be spilled or it could be easily knocked over. Make sure the surface it is placed on is a stable and level surface.
